Dirty Magazine

The Dirty Magazine will be dedicated to the love and appreciation of old shit, from slot machines, hot rods and cafés to guitars, vintage fairgrounds, motorcycles, music and clothing – as well as people who have learnt and practice old skills in the modern world, for instance corsetry, blacksmithing, signwriting, maintaining old machinery etc...

The first issue is due out in July and (amongst regular features like album / book reviews, how-to's, how-nots etc) it will feature guitars made from tin, the art of corsetry, stock car racing in the 60s, Indianscot's 2 Face, the story of Chicken Snake and Jerry Teel, a handsome Model A, Gypsy Tours in the 1930s, and a bit of pinball wizardry thrown in for good measure.

The Dirty Mag will be quarterly and will be available through the DB shop.

We are putting it together now and the print slot is booked...no turning back now!

Scott Biram is a jolly decent chap....loves his whiskey....we played a few shows with the wild Texan when he has been in the UK. Memorable one was down Hastings where the plastered Biram done an 'extended' performance to the disgust of the promoter. They evntually turned the power off and played music over the top of him. He threw a wobbler only to receive a punch from the bouncer....chaos ensued!! the night ended with the Black Diamond Heavies' keyboard player Reverent John Wesley Myers spending a night in the cells!!

Once quoted "A lot of people don’t know this, but the funny thing is that my middle name doesn’t even start with an H. It’s a joke. But with the H, I can tell people I’m Scott Hiram Biram—Hank Williams’s first name is Hiram. "

Brooklands Museum

checked out the Museum at brooklands the other day....some very nice bikes and cars there. Had a great chat with a couple of old boy volunteers. cool little place...seeped in history. Seeing bikes and cars riding the banked track in the day must have been summat else!

Gonna do a Dirty Bobbers Gypsy Tour starting there in early Sept, running along the coast road and into the Scavengers CC meet at the Rose & Crown in Stelling Minnis....can't wait to get back there!

scored this cool book off evil bay for 15 sheets the other day. Been outbid a few time in the past on copies. My dog-eared first edition (not the one shown) is a cool little font of knowledge on twenties and thirties american bikes (HD/Indian/Henderson). Bit of a dodgy past in Canadian band Crash Test Dummies but after settlin in London he found his art with the Harp and a Akai Headrush pedal, meant for guitar that you push one button to record and another to play it back. Junior Kimbrough - Done Got Old

Charlie Feathers called Kimbrough "the beginning and end of all music." Long time mate of RL Burnside also a Fat Possum label mate. He used to run a juke joint caled Junior's joint and when he died his sons continued until it burned to the ground in April 2000.

The Blues Explosion were the first band I heard playing the Blues with their own tastes/ experiences as the driving force. They were not 'Pony Tail' blues, trying to mimick the Delta/Chicago sound and describing it as high art but playing the blues from what they knew - NY punk/trash. It worked. Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James sharecropped, made bootleg whiskey, played guitar in open D minor tuning and developed the three-finger picking technique. Re-discovered at the same time as the masterful Son House in '64, he found long awaited recognition with Chris Thomas King covering his "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" for the film O Brother Where Art Thou and Cream and Deep Purple covering his 'I'm So Glad'.

Guy sent me link with a pic of my VL from GK this month. (http://www.bikeexif.com) But spotted in the older posts a 1948 Indian 648 Big Base Scout! Drool drool! Only seven factory Big Base ‘Daytona’ Scouts still exist. The ‘Big Base’ Indian 648s were the ultimate development of flathead engine technology, with high-dome pistons carrying two compression rings and one oil ring. The name came from the huge oil capacities, because the bikes were fitted with extra-large sumps designed to help engines cope with the stresses of racing. It says later in the post that thanks go to Steve Plowman of Strathbran Speed Shop.....please tell me you didn't let this pass through your hands Steve?!

The Godfathers

used to go and see the Godfathers play live years ago. Overflowing with attitude and defying the current day fashion with their straight suit look. They were cool and hard as nails. Years later we played a few gigs as the Jooks with Kris Dollimore (The Godfather's guitar man) who now plays a blinding blues guitar. Had a great night when the Godfathers played a reform gig last year in London with us and the Jim Jones Review in support. Hats off Kris!

The old hill climb pics conjure an image of excitement and danger as these heavy flatheads ascended near impossible gradients. Many of the events were free admission and drew large crowds with riders sometimes complaining afterwards about the difficult courses. Such as the event at Lazy Lane Hill in Southington in 1931. The course was 200 foot long and 40% grade with one place at 50%. Injuries happened but the organisers defended the climb saying

'We are of course sorry for the mishaps but must bear in mind that we are catering to spectators and it is thrills and spills that they have come to see and of course if they do not get them are dissapointed and perhaps will not be strong boosters for our type of sport'

Steve from Strathbran Speedshop posted a pic of the Speer Special on Dirty Bobbers so had to check out some facts about this racer. Frank Speer built the Speer Special to compete in AMA class C dirt track racing. Between the late 1930’s and 1947, the Speer Special was piloted by Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Gerish who held an AMA Class C license and raced the bike on dirt tracks throughout the New England area.
It has a 1929 HD DL motor and frame, but several racing modifications have been done to the motorcycle. The front forks are from a 1936 RL model, the carburetor is a Linkert M6, and the engine has been heavily modified with high compression heads and drilled connecting rods for lighter weight. Larger intake nipples have been welded to the cylinders and a JD manifold has been added to accommodate the 1-1/4” carburetor. The original sliding gear transmission was also replaced with a 1933-1937 style constant-mesh “slant-top” gear box.
The Speer Special now at Cyclemo’s Motorcycle Museum in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee.

The AMA announces an improtant change in American motorcycle sport. The birth of the bobber on the streets.

Article X. Section 4 as follows:
Class C Competition - This type of competition is conducted with the express purpose of providing the AVERAGE MOTORCYCLIST with a program of sports, in which he may compete with his REGULAR STANDARD MOTORCYCLE. Any machine entered in Class C competition MUST be the property of the entrant and MUST be duly registered to him.
Motorcycles used in Class C competition must be of catalogued design. They must be fitted with proper working gear box, clutch, brakes, rear mudguard and chain guard as catalogued. Lighting equipment, including accessories and front mudguard may be removed. Silencers may be removed providing such removal does not leave the exhaust pipes pointing down so as to stir up the dust.
No fuel other than gasoline, or not over 80 octaine rating is permitted in any Class C competition.

Reading a great book at the moment written by Butch Baer. It's a scrapbook of newspaper clips and photos of the day, following the exploits of Woodsie and Frenchy Castonguay. You even get a 25min DVD with some great early clips.

Elk Promotions put on a few jumbles and shows throughout the year but the best is the Ashford Classic Motorcycle Show and Bike Jumble on Easter Monday 5th April 2010. Always well attended and the car park is always just as a good as the show. It's a bit of a clique with the usual rivet counters and beardies looking down their nose at a butchered Trump but worth going all the same.

Yvonne Stagg, the first female owner of a Wall of Death. She started at the fairground as a rock seller and after riding the Wall on the handlebars she was hooked. She eventually rode on the one and only Tornado Smith's Wall at Kursaal in Southend. She ended up buying Tornado's Wall and took it to Dreamland in Margate where I saw it as a kid. At first she only had BSAs but eventually got her hands on an Indian Scout. Her life ended in controversy as her husband was convicted for stabbing her lover and she committed suicide in the New year of 1976/77 following a long battle with alcohol.

I love this bike. After seeing the Knuck in a VL frame Guy posted on Dirty Bobbers I was intrigued to see if anyone else had done it.

Check this out, a bored out Knucklehead engine that he fitted with a high-performance cam and dual carbs. A 1931 Harley VL frame, stretched by an inch to fit the larger engine.

The fuel tank has been modified to carry petrol only in the left half; the right half is oil tank, battery, and coil.

Speed over safety in what was the closest experience yet to the Rome Gladiatorial Colosseum. Board track bikes of its era had no brakes, clutch, or throttle (carbs were run wide open, with the only control of the engine speed being an ignition cut-out). Glorious deathtraps!

In 1916, Indian introduced the Model H racer, and was offered to the public at $350. It featured overhead-valve heads with four valves per cylinder, and was easily capable of speeds of over 120 mph. In various forms, it was raced on the dirt track as well as on the boards with very great success. It is unknown how many of the 8-valve racers were manufactured, but production was very small; most were ridden either by factory riders or were "loaned" to promising riders.

Many Wall of Death 'shows' had women as their main attraction. I loved this about fairground rides. Ignored social convention to make a buck but at the same time unwittingly challenged current beliefs.

Thinking about tearing down my Bonnie. It is a 1978 T140 and had the engine re-built by John and Steve at Roadstar Cycles. She is a sweet little runner and can keep up with the pack. With her being OIF it gives some concerns about styling. Rob on Flywheel posted some pics of his T120 OIF and I think he has done a sound job with the lines. The sort of look I am thinking of is along the lines of a Trump pulled from Born Loser MC blog which used to be owned by Mike. First pics as she is, second of Robs T120 and third Born Loser inspiration pics.

Cannon was the son of slaves, born in Memphis in 1883. He made his first banjo from a guitar neck and a bread pan. Famous to some as the Jug Stompers and others for Walk Right In covered by the Grateful dead. As all great bluesmen he died poor, The Lovin' Spoonful played at a benefit concert in Memphis as a final salute to Cannon to raise money for Cannon's tombstone when he died in 1979.

Ave a proper gander at this!
It was roped off in a car museum with little info and the geezer asks if it was for sale and the owner said yes!! Wasn't til he took it apart that he knew he a something. Drilled, lightened and polished rods (KR Harley rods), engine cases were modified to run ball bearings on the pinion and drive sides, the Schunk cams were square, the carburetor was a Linkert M3 ‘Bomb Sight’ model used on Harley racers, the pistons had all the meat hogged out of the insides and the intake ports were larger than on a 74-inch Chief. After investigation it was found to have been raced by Ed Kretz.
Not to be confused with the 1948 Big Base Scouts, the 1939 engines are the only ones that were sand cast and these five 1939 Big Base engines were sent to various handpicked riders to compete in Class C racing (sort of cheating).
Here's the even cooler bit...the bike, after changing hands a few times and still raced it was eventually sold to the racer Pate Killian who knew Von Dutch and had him paint the tanks three different times — the last Von Dutch paint job is still on it!!

1932 Harley 350cc Hillclimber

Built by Antique Motorcycle Works in Oregon City. The bike has a stretched original frame,

original wheels, front end, and rear brake. The engine has the original crankcase and transmission. The barrel and upper end has been reproduced by AMW's. The handlebars have been custom made for this motorcycle in the fashion of the Hillclimbers of this era.

Johnny Thunders

Many rumors surround Thunders' death at the St. Peter House in New Orleans in April 1991. He apparently died of drug-related causes, but it has been speculated that it was the result of foul play. Dee Dee Ramone took a call in the next day from Johnny's rhythm guitar player. "They told me that Johnny had gotten mixed up with some bastards... who ripped him off for his methadone supply. They had given him LSD and then murdered him. He had gotten a pretty large supply of methadone in England, so he could travel and stay away from those creeps - the drug dealers, Thunders imitators, and losers like that."

Last summer at the Old Indians Never Die rally in Scotland this little 101 Bobber blew me away. It rightfully picked up the title of Best Bobber at the show, a new category.
The 101 Scout was an evolution of the Standard Scout that had been introduced in 1920 and enlarged to forty-five cubic inches in 1927. The main differences other than the engine size to the earlier Scout, and had more fork rake, a longer wheelbase, sloping footboards, and a lower seat height. It was the first Scout model with a front brake. It is always said that this was the chosen bike for Wall Of Death but in the Allan Ford book this seems not to be the case. The sloping boards were undesirable for obvious reasons and so was the frame length. In fact if the 101 was used it was modified and shortened.
This little bobber shows off the 101 features perfectly and it's handling and low centre of gravity made it a must for racers and hillclimbers of the day.

When I was about 18 I started listening to the Yardbirds becuse they had a cassette with Sonny Boy Williamson playing with them going cheap. It blew me away. I loved the harp from that day forward. The Salt Ghost.
Dirty Bobberers have been raving about this bike recently and justifiably so. It is a proper piece of racing history and although the styling was in the main for racing purposes it ooozes cool.
It came out of hiding in 2005 where an old boy brought it in a trailer to the Bub Speed trials. It was first bought by Keith Martin of Big D and then Wes from Four Aces got his brit grubby hands on it along with Tyler from Lowbrow.
A classic piece of race hstory with docs and trophies to prove it. 61 Bonnie, 48 rigid frame and like my Mongrel 5T has a swingarm pre unit geaxbox fitted. The cams have some serious 'HIGH' lift man! 2 Amal GP carbs with 2 matchbox floats meaning the engine has to be continuously revved to keep it alive due to no idle.
Everything on this bike is wallowing in cool from the seat, tank, pegs, open primary and clips ons.

Wanted a pre-unit but didn't know it was gonna have an alternator crank and a mag casing!! solution - total loss on the battery, good enough for MOT. 1952 rigid frame, 1957 engine with high lift cams, finned rocker valve covers, open clutch primary and amal monobloc carb with finned float chamber. Paint by Old School Customs. Borani 16" back wheel; Suzuki 21" front. Original 60s 7/8" Z bars from Disaster Dave (before dirty bobbers did em). White rubbers from Baron Speed Shop, shift knob from an a cupboard in Virginia, and original Baker car rear light. Metalflake seat from Justified Defiance. Me an me ol man had loads of fun doing this one. We called it the Mongrel.
Might change our URL to dirty hoppers!!
